PINEBROOKE FARM
Cabot, Vermont

Tucked away in a little village in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont is a 4 acre mini farm called Pinebrooke Farm. During the summer months it’s not unusual to see people pass by and slow down to watch the girls out on pasture. Occasionally they’ll stop to ask about the mini Holsteins, and why they hadn’t seen more of them inVermont. Ibis comical question never gets old. Of course, I enthusiastically reply, “they’re not miniature Holsteins but Jacob Sheep” With various questions and comments by visitors especially every fall when the peepers come through town I’m always compelled to share all about these intelligent, fascinating, and uniquely beautiful animals. In the past during the school year kids and teachers have walked up to the farm to learn about them. At the end of the tour I’d share my usual comment, “They are quite Ewe- unique”. Leaving the farm they’d Roll their eyes. The kids thought that was terrible joke too. There’s been no other sheep that loves, makes me laugh, fascinates, perplexes, annoys, challenges, me more than this wonderful breed. I’ve owned and managed other sheep breeds but as far as I’m concerned Jacob Sheep have it all. Intelligence, humor, mischievousness, pride, great parenting, persistence, stamina, and a knack for getting under your skin. Once you’ve owned Jacob Sheep it’s almost impossible to choose another breed. Jacob sheep qualities are what I look for in our small flock. The fleece is superb and easy to work with. I’m a stickler for confirmation, color, fleece quality and personality not necessarily in that order. Enjoying these special sheep while sharing and learning new things about them has been a lifelong passion. I don’t presume that I know all there is to know about this breed so I’m constantly doing research through articles, reference books, and personal experiences. I add some of this knowledge to my library. One example is the Jacob Sheep book “Jacob Sheep in America” by Ingrid Painter (highly recommended reading for those interested in genetics). My 30 years experience has resulted in a deep seeded devotion to the preservation of this breed. As I previously mentioned this is a very small farm and I try to keep the numbers very low. I believe preserving this magnificent heritage breed is paramount today because everything connected to domestic and wild nature is rapidly changing. I continue to hope that in some small way I may be part of saving this breed by encouraging others to do the same.
